Monstrous Beauty by Elizabeth Fama

Goodreads Summary:

Fierce, seductive mermaid Syrenka falls in love with Ezra, a young naturalist. When she abandons her life underwater for a chance at happiness on land, she is unaware that this decision comes with horrific and deadly consequences.

Almost one hundred forty years later, seventeen-year-old Hester meets a mysterious stranger named Ezra and feels overwhelmingly, inexplicably drawn to him. For generations, love has resulted in death for the women in her family. Is it an undiagnosed genetic defect . . . or a curse? With Ezra’s help, Hester investigates her family’s strange, sad history. The answers she seeks are waiting in the graveyard, the crypt, and at the bottom of the ocean—but powerful forces will do anything to keep her from uncovering her connection to Syrenka and to the tragedy of so long ago.

My Review:
I had wanted to read Monstrous beauty I had heard a lot about it. I loved the cover it was so pretty. I really liked the book as I was reading it but, toward the middle and the end I found that I got confused a lot. There were so many different aspects of the story...mermaids, ghosts, crazy deaths, curses, and insta love. The story is about a curse that has caused a lot of trouble for Hester's family. She eventually figures out why, after meeting the pastor and Ezra. There are mysterious forces at work. Between all the ghosts, curses, and sole swapping I got lost a couple times. It made sense in the end but, I had a hard time getting really into the story. I felt like when she was with the mermaids that it wasn't really necessary. Maybe separately the story would have been better.

I really liked Hester. She didn't know it until further in but, she was the lightening rod to the crazy stuff happening in her town. She started a chain of events that threw her for a loop. I liked the relationship between Hester and Ezra. It felt so fast but, it made more sense at the end. The book goes back and forth between time periods with Ezra and Syrenka's story and Hester's story.

I felt so bad for Ezra! He was such a sweet heard and just wanted to be with his love. He has been through so much that when his story ended I didn't feel bad. He needed peace! All that just to be with the one you love. Kind of a dream guy, not many would do what he did.

This review was harder to write. The book didn't stand out as much as I hoped it would. I still enjoyed the story however. And if you like killer mermaids instead of the Disney version you will like this book.

Christmas Kisses by H.M. Ward

Goodreads Summary:

This book will be 99 CENTS on release date: Dec 1, 2012

Genre: New Adult Holiday Romance
Approx. 100 pages/ 23K words.

How hard is it to NOT have sex with him? Lust has melted Holly Connelly’s brain and it’s all Ryan Darcy’s fault. He’s been ruthlessly flirting with her for the past three years. Ryan’s a sex god complete with sinful body, endless wit, and an orgasm-inducing smile. One sultry look from him will make her panties jump off her body. His endless string of one-night stands has Holly thinking she’ll be just another conquest. Since she actually has feelings for the guy, it makes it that much harder to put off his advances. When they get trapped together by a snowstorm, it’s all she can do to resist him. If Holly says yes, she’ll probably regret it. If she says no, she’ll always wonder what if.

My Review:
I was lucky enough to be given an ARC of this one!! I loved the story and the romance was perfect. I think we all have had that one guy, the guy that we never thought we could have. This is how Holly feels about Ryan. They guy she has wanted for years but, he is not the type to have a girlfriend. He's more into bed buddies then actual girlfriends. It is by chance that Holly runs into Ryan at a concert. Things heat up from that point on. A snow storm has been raging outside and when Ryan offers to ride with Holly home the night takes a drastic change in events. Lets just say I have a whole new appreciation for dorm rooms. I did not know magic like that took place in dorm rooms! The romance between these two is intense. It is one that has been boiling for some time and lust like boils over in amazing ways, but for Holly more then just lust is involved. Her heart is aching for Ryan. There is also the complication of being in Texas for college while Ryan is in New York.

Ryan is your typical hot guy who wants to hit it and quit it. He comes off as a real playboy who doesn't want a relationship. He is very good at hiding his true feelings. I like how the story goes back and forth between Holly and Ryan. It lets you know how they are really feeling on the inside. The romance between them is sooo sweet too. It's the kind all women want!

I loved this story and it was during Christmas, which is my favorite time of the year so all around great! It is was one of my favorite ones from H.M. Ward. I think the romance just felt so real, like it could happen to anyone. That's what made it so good. It could have been a story about anyone. A real story! Once again I am blown away by H.M. Ward!!

My Reviews

Goodreads Summary:
A simple mission turned deadly.

Nineteen-year-old vampire Dawn has led a sheltered life within the confines of her father’s presidential headquarters. Upon being sent on a mission to revamp four goofy misfits into guardians of a peaceful little town of Angel Creek, Dawn believes that all her dreams have finally come true. What starts off as a simple task, turns into something unexpected, changing Dawn’s life forever and leading the action-loving, thrill-seeking vampire teen on a path of mystery, danger and intrigue.

When a human girl is kidnapped by a group of rogue vamps, Dawn discovers that there is more going on in Angel Creek than meets the eye. And it all connects to Ethan, the cute newcomer who seems too perfect to be true, Sebastian, the mysterious vampire with a turbulent past, and even Dawn herself. Dawn must not only succeed in revamping the troubled recruits, but must also prevent the vampire race from being overtaken by a malevolent villain who has a strange and obsessive fascination with her. As threat escalates, romance blooms, and ghosts from her past begin to surface, Dawn is sure of only one thing: her life will never be the same.

My Review:
This was a completely different kind of vampire book then I thought it would be. Most of the books I have read about vampires they are creepy and mysterious and drink only human or animal blood. I thought that a lot of the ideas in this book were very modern like Transylvania Shore and blood pop! Because come on in this day and age that would defiantly happen! The book also ties in some really cool things that I never saw coming! I don't want to The story was really inventive too. Dawn gets to live her dream by training a group of miss-fit vampires and truly prove how much she has trained and grown.

I really liked Dawn. I always like it when a girl can kick some serious butt! Dawn is not someone I would want to make mad or run into in a dark alley. She takes her work seriously and would do anything for her loved ones and friends. I think that is a very important characteristic for the female lead. Sebastian...I am kind of rooting for him! He seems like a very interesting character and it should be interesting to see where things go. Especially with how the book started.

It will be interesting to see what happens with this series. Especially with Aurora!

My Review:
ReAwakened was probably one of my favorite books of the year. It is full of romance, mystery, and action. There were twists in the plot that I never saw coming. Not all authors are able to do that. I love it when I can be surprised by a book. There are a few new characters that are introduced as well and I enjoyed reading about them. Well except for the new vampire president, he is a dud.

ReAwakened picked up not long after ReVamped ended. Dawn and her crew are in the process of healing but, Dawn has a few more thing going on. She is trying to grieve for her father and still has Aurora kicking around inside her head. Aurora seems to be very determined to not let Dawn and Sebastian be together. I loved this added twist to the story! We get to learn more born vampires and a thing called a forta. I'm not going to tell you what it is because it would be to spoilery. It was yet another awesome twist! Dawn grew as a character throughout this book. When the born vampires go missing Dawn feels especially connected. Being a born herself she takes on the task of finding them because no one else will help. Even the vampires have corrupt governments. I feel like Dawn always takes on so much to help others and doesn't really think about herself. She is a very selfless person. Even at the expense of her own life sometimes. One thing is for sure. She is a kick butt female who you don't want to make mad or mess with the people she loves. I still enjoyed the team of Hunter, Sophie, Brook, and Seth. We get to learn about Hunters life and why he is the way he is. His story made me teary. Brooks story is also kind of sad. "Misfits" definitely describes this group well.

There are some awesome new characters. Lena is actually pretty awesome. A born vampire from Sebastian's past. I didn't dislike her as much as I thought I would. I really really liked Razor. I hope we get to see more of him! He is a smart mouthed mystery man. He has no filter on his mouth, it's great. I love how he pokes fun at Dawn. I'm so glad he was added to the story. That's all I'm willing to say though. there are more characters too but, it would be to spoilery if I talked more about them. You will just have to read the book!

The plot flowed so well throughout the book. It was full of twists and turns to keep you very interested. It ends on a huge cliffhanger that has left me needing the next book! It was one of those ending that has you flipping your Kindle over looking for another page. I highly recommend this series!

Favorite Quotes:
Razor: "The 'Baby, I'm a doctor' line works wonders on the ladies. Add to that, 'I'm a vampire doctor', and their clothes practically fall off." and "I really should consider branching out my practice and start treating problems of the heart. Dr. Love, they could call me. Dr. Sexy Love." Dawn: "I will not be getting any carnal urges. Trust me." and "Her DNA lay embedded deep inside me, awakening something dangerous and volatile within me." Aurora: "I'm going to destroy you," she vowed. "And there's nothing you can do to stop me."

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin

Goodreads Summary:
Mara Dyer doesn't think life can get any stranger than waking up in a hospital with no memory of how she got there.

It can.

She believes there must be more to the accident she can’t remember that killed her friends and left her mysteriously unharmed.

There is.

She doesn’t believe that after everything she’s been through, she can fall in love.

She’s wrong.

My Review:
I had seen so many good reviews for this book that I just had to read it. I also really liked the cover so I had to go buy it. The description doesn't really give you much to go on so I really didn't know what to expect. To be honest after finishing it I'm not sure if Mara is kind of psychotic or not. I got lost a few times while reading and had to go back and re-read to make sure I had it all right. However, the story was still very interesting to read. Completely different from any YA I have ever read. Mara has had a rough few months. The accident that killed her friends but, left her alive has been haunting her. She is seeing things that couldn't possible be there. She questions whether or not she is crazy as more deaths keep happening around her. Her only saving grace is her brother Daniel, Noah, and Jamie. when Mara warms up to Noah they start to discover some pretty interesting things. Mara however has a hard time dealing with her "gift". I don't blame her at all. It's kind of crazy and uncontrollable but, I don't want to say what it is exactly. The supernatural aspect of the book took me by surprise!

Noah appears to be like a decent guy. He really tries to help Mara which is sweet. I feel like they are going to have a hard time in upcoming books. Mara doesn't believe in herself like Noah does in her. He honestly just wants to help her. Mara is worried about his safety and I understand why. He is risking his life. I hope he is strong enough to get Mara to believe in herself. If anyone can get her its Noah. He is like a knight in shining armor!

I honestly have no idea what is going to happen to Mara. Especially with the way this book ended. I am very interested in finding out what is going on with her and why! I hope we get answers in book 2!

Opal by Jennifer Armentrout TRAILER REVEAL!

No one is like Daemon Black.

When he set out to prove his feelings for me, he wasn’t fooling around. Doubting him isn’t something I’ll do again, and now that we’ve made it through the rough patches, well... There’s a lot of spontaneous combustion going on.

But even he can’t protect his family from the danger of trying to free those they love.

After everything, I’m no longer the same Katy. I’m different... And I’m not sure what that will mean in the end. When each step we take in discovering the truth puts us in the path of the secret organization responsible for torturing and testing hybrids, the more I realize there is no end to what I’m capable of. The death of someone close still lingers, help comes from the most unlikely source, and friends will become the deadliest of enemies, but we won’t turn back. Even if the outcome will shatter our worlds forever.

Together we’re stronger... and they know it.

If you've seen my to-read list on Goodreads then you know there are plenty that I could use. So I decided to use this feature every Wednesday.

Goodreads Summary:

Anna Whitt, daughter of a guardian angel and a demon, promised herself she’d never do the work of her father—polluting souls. She’d been naive to make such a claim. She’d been naive about a lot of things.

Haunted by demon whisperers, Anna does whatever she can to survive, even if it means embracing her dark side and earning an unwanted reputation as her school’s party girl. Her life has never looked more bleak. And all the while there’s Kaidan Rowe, son of the Duke of Lust, plaguing her heart and mind.

When an unexpected lost message from the angels surfaces, Anna finds herself traveling the globe with Kopano, son of Wrath, in an attempt to gain support of fellow Nephilim and give them hope for the first time. It soon becomes clear that whatever freedoms Anna and the rest of the Neph are hoping to win will not be gained without a fight. Until then, Anna and Kaidan must put aside the issues between them, overcome the steamiest of temptations yet, and face the ultimate question: is loving someone worth risking their life?

My Thoughts:
I loved Sweet Evil. I was so happy when Wendy Higgins was signed for more books!! It looks like Anna and Kaidan will be spending more time together and him being the son of Lust makes me kind of excited about what could happen! I wonder if she will go toward the dark side or the light. We will have to see. And I love the cover!

I'm also doing a giveaway in the post right below this one! If you are a fan of H.M. Ward its a huge prize pack that includes 5 signed books! Check it out if you's like.

Secrets Vol. 4 by Ella Steele

Goodreads Summary:

At night, when Anna closes her eyes, everything comes rushing back; the sensuous sound of Cole’s voice, his scalding touch, and the way his eyes roved over her body like he could never get enough. Flirtation, promises of passionate sex, and nights filled with Cole’s sexy smile are gone. Anna worries that her crush on Cole was something more, because her life is total agony without him.

Anna realizes she’s at a turning point. Someone burned her. This isn’t a little blister that would go away on its own, it’s an inferno that destroyed everything it touched. In a matter of minutes, Anna lost her future and the man who holds her heart.

Anna has to decide how and when to get even with the person who destroyed her life—Sophia Sottero.

This is an Adult romance and is not a YA book. Just an FYI to readers.

My Review:
Volume 4 is mostly about Anna trying to figure out what to do with her life after all the crap goes down with Cole and Sophia. An epic battle is about to be fought in the courts I think. When Anna is called to be a witness its just the icing on the cake for her. After Cole broke her heart Anna goes through a rough time. She is depressed about how things went down with Cole and pissed at Sophia and I don't blame her at all.  I hope Sophia gets what is coming to her because I wanted to punch her in the face. I was proud of Anna for standing up to her! Throughout Volume 4 Anna feels like she is being watched all the time. Perhaps she is being paranoid because of the news paper article but, maybe she's not....you will have to read to find out!!

Cole is still super hot and cold towards Anna for a good portion of Volume 4. This leaves the doors wide open for Jessie! I found myself liking Jessie more and more. He seems like a stand up guy who wants to do the right thing. Volume 4 gives us a pretty hot love scene as well! Woohoo! I know, I've been waiting for it to! Who it was with however, will remain a secret!! Yes, I know lame joke but, I had to do it. You have to read to find out sorry, I refuse to give that away. Edward still creeps me out. He's all weird and stalker like and I don't like that.

Volume 4 leaves you on one heck of a cliff hanger. My heart was pounding by the time I read the last sentence. I have no idea what's going to happen. It could be anyone! It could be a good guy or a bad guy! I need to know! That probably makes no sense to you yet but, when you read the last sentence you will know exactly what I am feeling. Volume 5 please!!

Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

Goodreads Summary:

Juliette hasn’t touched anyone in exactly 264 days.

The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette’s touch is fatal. As long as she doesn’t hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don’t fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color.

The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war– and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she’s exactly what they need right now.

Juliette has to make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior.

My Review:
I was so surprised by this book. It wasn't just another "my touch kills" book, which seems to be so popular right now. The style of writing was different from what I have read in the past. I loved how  sentences were crossed out. Like Juliette was still trying to change the way she thought even when she wrote it down. Also the way that she would think/say things three times. It was like a nervous tick or something. It made Juliette seem more vulnerable. In the beginning I was constantly trying to figure out if Juliette was sane or not. As the book went on I got my answer. She was truly a broken spirit. To be locked away for that long with no human contact is unthinkable. To be so easily discarded by those who are suppose to love you....I truly felt for her. Her "gift" prohibits her from actually touching anyone. Well, her gift and her fear of accidentally killing someone. Her fears are real. When a mystery boy is placed in her cell things change. Juliette has a lot of strange new feelings and this boy has a lot of questions. The day the soldiers break into her cell and take her and the boy things change forever. Juliette is now involved in a plot to torture and kill people. Will she be a weapon or a warrior???

Warner proved to be a very interesting character. I haven't decided if i hate him or not. I think there is a lot more going on behind the scenes then we know. I have a feeling in the Destroy Me novella we will get to know Warner a little more. I think he might be a good person deep, deep down inside. It would be interesting to get to meet his dad. Adam on the other hand is a knight in shining armor. You always remember the stuff that scars you as a kid. Adam may not have ever talked to Juliette as a child but, his presence helped. Adam may be my new favorite guy character! I hope his intentions stay true. James was also a great character. The cutest 10 year old ever! Poor kid has been through way to much to be only 10. I hope we get to see more of that little guy.

Shatter Me was a surprising great read. I can't wait for Unravel me to come out! I wish I would have read it sooner!

Title: Unravel Me
Author: Tahereh Mafi
Release Date: February 13, 2013
Series Number: 2

Goodreads Summary:
tick, tick, tick, tick, tick
it's almost
time for war.

Juliette has escaped to Omega Point. It is a place for people like her—people with gifts—and it is also the headquarters of the rebel resistance.

She's finally free from The Reestablishment, free from their plan to use her as a weapon, and free to love Adam. But Juliette will never be free from her lethal touch.

Or from Warner, who wants Juliette more than she ever thought possible.

In this exhilarating sequel to Shatter Me, Juliette has to make life-changing decisions between what she wants and what she thinks is right. Decisions that might involve choosing between her heart—and Adam's life.

My Thoughts:
I was lucky enough to win a signed copy of Shatter Me the first book and I loved it! The writing was so unique. It caught me completely off guard. I literally just finished it today on my lunch break and will be putting the review up later today. I can't wait to see what happens in Unravel Me!

E-ARC review of Riptide by H.M. Ward

Amazon Summary:

A random hook-up isn't enough for Trystan, not anymore. After everything Trystan went through to tell Mari that he loves her, there is no way that he's letting her walk away without knowing how he really feels. Every mask is stripped away making Trystan completely vulnerable. Mari's the one girl he wants, that he knew he'd never have. But, the look on Mari's face--the way she kissed him--makes Trystan think that confessing his feelings was worth the risk.

Shocked, Mari stands there staring at Trystan. As if it weren't enough that Trystan is internet super star, Day Jones, but the song he wrote was about her. That was her name on the music. It was her name etched into his heart. Trystan Scott loves her.

Everything Mari wants is within reach. She just has to have enough guts to reach out and take it.

Book #4 in the SECRET LIFE OF TRYSTAN SCOTT series will be out Winter 2012/ early 2013.

My Review:
This series has not let me down yet. Riptide continues right where Backdraft left off. Mari was staring down Trystan as she walked in on him singing! I know I can't believe it ended like that either!  Anyway, things seem to heat up from there. I loved the way Mari grew during Riptide. She was more confident around Trystan and didn't take any crap from Brie. You will have to read to see how that one turned out. It was interesting to see how much alike Trystan and Mari's home lives were. The fact that they didn't really want to tell each other about it was kind of cute. I can't believe it took Mari so long to break down. I expected it sooner to be honest. For the record, I strongly dislike both of their dads. They should go fishing together...seriously. They are similar in horrible ways. Mari and Trystan's lives are like a sad playlist of songs. They both put up a strong front for everyone else when inside they are broken. They are absolutely perfect for each other and don't even know it completely yet!

Trystan...what more could I possibly say about him. He is perfect. Every man should strive to be the kind of man he is growing into. He has lived a hard life and doesn't want to be known as Day Jones because of his past. He is probably the least selfish character I have ever read. His love is so pure it is beyond words. He puts on a good mask for everyone but, with Mari he can almost be himself. He is still unwilling to talk to anyone about his home situation even though it could cost him his graduation. Tucker and Mari are both there for him, he just can't talk about it. I understand why.

Riptide ends in a crazy, what the heck just happened kind of way. I finished it hours ago and am still like....o..m..g! It has left me desperately needing the next installment. I have become so attached to these characters that I have not know how their story will end.

Elixir by Jennifer Armentrout

Goodreads Summary:

Aiden St. Delphi will do anything to save Alex.
Even if it means doing the one thing he will never forgive himself for.
Even if it means making war against the gods.

IF you haven't read Deity this review will contain spoilers for you!! Seriously! There is no way to do this review without being spoliery. So read at your own risk!

My Review:
I feel like I have to start this review by saying I would have gone mad waiting for Apollyon. This novella was much needed after the way Deity ended. I loved that it was from Aiden's POV! It was a nice glimpse into his head to see how he was feeling. I felt so bad for him throughout Elixir. To see the woman he loves in a state like Alex is in after the awakening. It was heart breaking. We learned a lot in this novella. There seems to be no way for Alex to block out Seth and when she does she is in a lot of pain. Aiden has a very tough decision to make. In order to keep Alex safe from Seth and to sever the bond there is only one choice....the elixir. Aiden hates himself for allowing it. Alex is a different person on the Elixir. Aiden struggles with this the whole time and is worried he has done the wrong thing. I have a feeling nothing will be the same when Alex finds out. If she finds out. If anyone can help Alex block out Seth some other way it's Aiden and he is willing to risk it all for her. Even risking pissing off the Gods. Elixir has kind of confirmed by bad feeling. That this series may not end well for Alex and Aiden. I hope that it does thought! After what they've been through I hope they get their happily ever after.

Wishlist Wednesday is a weekly post put on by Dani at the Pen to Paper blog. Where you post a book you really really want to read or one that has been on your wishlist! If you've seen my to-read list on Goodreads then you know there are plenty that I could use. So I decided to use this feature every Wednesday.

Title: Shadow of Night
Author: Deborah Harkness
Release Date: July 10, 2012
Series Number: 2

Goodreads Summary:
"Together we lifted our feet and stepped into the unknown"—the thrilling sequel to the New York Times bestseller A Discovery of Witches

Deborah Harkness exploded onto the literary scene with her debut novel, A Discovery of Witches, Book One of the magical All Souls Trilogy and an international publishing phenomenon. The novel introduced Diana Bishop, Oxford scholar and reluctant witch, and the handsome geneticist and vampire Matthew Clairmont; together they found themselves at the center of a supernatural battle over an enchanted manuscript known as Ashmole 782.

Now, picking up from A Discovery of Witches’ cliffhanger ending, Shadow of Night plunges Diana and Matthew into Elizabethan London, a world of spies, subterfuge, and a coterie of Matthew’s old friends, the mysterious School of Night that includes Christopher Marlowe and Walter Raleigh. Here, Diana must locate a witch to tutor her in magic, Matthew is forced to confront a past he thought he had put to rest, and the mystery of Ashmole 782 deepens.

Deborah Harkness has crafted a gripping journey through a world of alchemy, time travel, and magical discoveries, delivering one of the most hotly anticipated novels of the season.

My Thoughts:
I haven't finished A Discovery of Witches (book 1) quite yet. But, I am in love with this series and am desperately wishing for this book! I was taken by surprise by this series. I was given book 1 by a friend and it has been passed around the ladies at work. I figured I would give it a try and was pleasantly surprised. Therefore I must know what will happen next!
