Omens (Cainsville #1) by Kelley Armstrong

Goodreads Summary:
#1 New York Times bestselling author Kelley Armstrong begins her new series with Omens, featuring a compelling new heroine thrust into a decades-old murder case and the dark mysteries surrounding her strange new home.

Twenty-four-year-old Olivia Taylor Jones has the perfect life. The only daughter of a wealthy, prominent Chicago family, she has an Ivy League education, pursues volunteerism and philanthropy, and is engaged to a handsome young tech firm CEO with political ambitions

But Olivia’s world is shattered when she learns that she’s adopted. Her real parents? Todd and Pamela Larsen, notorious serial killers serving a life sentence. When the news brings a maelstrom of unwanted publicity to her adopted family and fiancĂ©, Olivia decides to find out the truth about the Larsens.

Olivia ends up in the small town of Cainsville, Illinois, an old and cloistered community that takes a particular interest in both Olivia and her efforts to uncover her birth parents’ past.

Aided by her mother’s former lawyer, Gabriel Walsh, Olivia focuses on the Larsens’ last crime, the one her birth mother swears will prove their innocence. But as she and Gabriel start investigating the case, Olivia finds herself drawing on abilities that have remained hidden since her childhood, gifts that make her both a valuable addition to Cainsville and deeply vulnerable to unknown enemies. Because there are darker secrets behind her new home and powers lurking in the shadows that have their own plans for her.

My Review:
I was given a copy for review from Dutton Adult in exchange for a honest review. I was so excited to get this book. I am a huge fan of Armstrong's writing. This was the fist book in an adult series that I have read from her. All I can say is, I will be picking up the rest of her other adult books! This is the fist book in the new Cainsville series. I assumed it would take awhile to introduce us to this new world but, it was done in a way that kept me interested. There is so much going on but, you don't get the full story. This left me needing to know more about these characters! Olivia is a socialite who lives in Chicago. She seems to have the perfect life with the perfect fiancee. Her life however takes on a drastic change when the press finds out that she was adopted and is really the daughter of a couple of serial killers! Olivia then flees Chicago to find out the truth about her life and her birth parents. Who is she? Where did she come from? Where her adoptive parents ever going to tell her?

Olivia ends up in Cainsville, Illinois. A small town with some very interesting people living in it. Throughout the book you get little chapters from other people's point of view. It could be someone she talked to at the diner, her land lord, or her Mother's lawyer Gabriel. I loved this! It was interesting to see what those people were thinking, it leaves you sooo curious as to what is really going on in this town. Olivia starts to notice things about herself the longer she is in Cainsville. She notices Omens. Little things that other people don't always see. She has always been kind of superstitious but, this is different. She has had this since childhood. After re-connecting with her birth mother, Pamela, she starts looking into her birth parents criminal case. With the help of her Mother's lawyer Gabriel. Their investigation puts them into dangerous situations. Could Olivia be in more danger then she knows? Are there mysteries in Cainsville that put her at more of a risk?

Gabriel turns out to be a very interesting guy. He's definitely not your average good looking hot shot lawyer that rides in on his white horse. His personality is kind of abrasive. He pretty much says it like it is. He cares for Olivia but, tries to deny it. I am dying to know what his secrets are. I know he has some! I am hoping as the series progresses that we get to learn more about him. He gets along pretty well with Olivia, they have their moments of course. They work well together actually. They make a great investigative team. It will be very interesting to see where they go together. It will take time, it's not your typical "Your so hot, I love you, be with me!" kind of relationship. Which is why I love it!!!

This book was full of twists and turns. I couldn't put it down. The writing was brilliant and it kept me wondering what was going to happen the whole time. I'm still not sure what is going to happen. The supernatural element was perfect. I felt like it could be "real" rather then fiction. I will definitly be keeping my eye out for when the next book will release!
